Frequently asked questions

What is a bullion premium, and why does it matter?

A bullion premium is the difference between an item's price and the estimated melt value of its precious-metal content. It may reflect manufacturing, distribution, dealer costs, scarcity, or demand. Comparing the amount and percentage can help you understand how much of the quoted price is above metal value, but it is not investment advice or a prediction of resale value.

Why can the calculated premium be negative?

A negative premium means the item price you entered is below its calculated melt value. That can happen because an input is wrong, because the spot price and item price were taken at different times, or because a seller is offering the item below estimated metal value. Recheck the weight, purity, currency, and spot-price basis before relying on the result.

Where should I get the spot price?

Use a current per-troy-ounce quote from a market-data source or bullion dealer you trust. The browser calculator intentionally does not fetch a live quote, so you control the price and timing used in the comparison. Enter the spot price and item price in the same currency. The iPhone app can provide market pricing as part of its broader toolset.

How do fineness, decimal purity, and karat differ?

Decimal purity expresses the precious-metal share between zero and one, so 0.999 means 99.9%. Fineness expresses the same share out of 1000, so 999 also means 99.9%. Karat is a 24-part scale used mainly for gold: 24K is nominally pure and 22K is 22 divided by 24. The web calculator accepts decimal purity or fineness, not karat values.

Are troy ounces the same as regular ounces or grams?

No. Precious metals are commonly measured in troy ounces, which are different from the avoirdupois ounces used for many everyday goods. The web calculator accepts total item weight only in troy ounces and does not convert grams or regular ounces. The displayed fine metal weight is the total troy-ounce weight multiplied by the normalized purity.

Is there an Android version?

Bullion Premium Calculator is currently offered for iPhone. There is no Android app listed at this time. Android users can use the free browser calculator for a focused premium-over-melt calculation without installing an app. The website does not announce or promise a future Android release.

How do I request a refund for an App Store purchase?

Apple handles App Store billing and refund requests. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, select Request a refund, and follow Apple's instructions. Eligibility varies by country or region and is determined by Apple. If the purchase is not shown or the request cannot be completed there, contact Apple Support for billing help.

How should I report a bug?

Email support with the app or page you were using, what you expected to happen, what happened instead, and the device and operating-system version. Include steps that reproduce the issue when possible. Do not send payment details or other sensitive information. For calculator issues, sample non-sensitive inputs can help verify the behavior.
